As our little gators enter kindergarten, they are eager and ready to learn. Homework assignments provide successful learning experiences. Meaningful homework forms the foundation of good work habits in later years. Positive homework helps establish the home-school connection and involves our parents as learning partners in your child's learning experiences. Homework in our class consist of four different components: 1. Monthly homework calendars 2. Nightly Reading logs 3. Literacy / Math folders 4. Family Fun Projects
Monthly Homework Calendars
Each month, a calendar of activities will be sent home in your child's folder. These activities are designed to support the learning that takes place in our classroom. All concepts / skills will be review skills, I will not send home any concepts that have not already been introduced for homework. Your child should be able to complete the learning activities with just a little support from you. The concepts should not need a great deal of explanation. As you work with your child during this time you will see which concepts / skills your child has successfully mastered and which ones they need to practice more to be successful!
Nightly Reading Log / 100 Book Club Reading
The Nightly Reading Log / 100 Book Club Reading log will be placed in your child's folder. I would like for you to practice reading skills for at least 10 minutes each night. It is imparative that our little gators make reading a habit! I would like for you to read to your child, and for your child to practice reading independently. I will be guiding your child to select books that are " good fit books" for them so they can be successful readers! I want to encourage your child to select books that they find interesting. I do not want my little ones to feel frustrated by reading books that are too difficult for them. I will be sending home books that we have practiced in class. In order to build fluency, it is important that these books be read over and over again. The more practice children have at reading, the more successful they will become.
Literacy / Math Skill Folders
I have designed the Literacy / Math folders to provide families an opportunity to get involved and excited about you little ones capabilities. The folders are designed to supplement, enhance, and extend our curriculum. The folders afford students the opportunity to work at their own pace and take ownership of their learning. The literacy folders will begin with letter / sound recognition. Once mastered the letters will be replaced with sight words and then sight word phrases. Math folders will begin with number identification. Please work with your child for 10 minutes each night.
Family Fun Projects
These projects are a great way to keep the school, home connections active. I highly encourage you to participate and have fun as a family! The children will share these projects orally. The projects will help your child develop skills for speaking, listening, and questioning. The children are always so proud of their projects and enjoy displaying them on our bulletin board.
